Verification really sucks
« on: January 02, 2012, 08:29:03 PM »

The following error or errors occurred while posting this message:
The letters you typed don't match the letters that were shown in the picture.

Verification has MANY R and K uses, with lines across the top of the letters, REALLY? SERIOUSLY? It's very hard to see the graphic.

I have to verify every post, and post edit.

That would get rather boring.

When you say verify every post do you mean the funny looking words in a box?

BK

yes BK i think he does

it is only 30 posts though

as for the registering on site for new members  "are you human" i`d of thought the answer would of been simply "yes"

the "bots" that try to spam the site dont actually read they just try to register

this simple littel question makes the admin/mods work that little bit easier when trying to sort out new member registraints  //wink//

Did we all have to do that? I can't remember lol. It's worth it to keep the spam away.

The process has probably changed a little since you registered BK, but the spammers have got smarter and the spambots have sneakier ways of infiltrating, hence the new members have to suffer a bit more to save the mods having to remove hundreds or even thousands of spam posts that can even totally clog a forum up.

I  always thought bots were a good thing  /shucks 2/ /shucks 2/ /shucks 2/

On another forum they currently have Alex [Bot], Bing [Bot], Google [Bot], Google Adsense [Bot], Google Desktop, Google Feedfetcher and Yahoo [Bot].

I always thought bots gathered info and put it in there search  engine  /shucks 2/ /shucks 2/ /shucks 2/

Spambots send out spam adverts, spybots gather info including e-mail addresses and bank details and both can be very disruptive to a forum.
The moderators have to make sure we don't allow spammer or their spambot programs onto the site. Any new member is researched and if their e-mail address links them with spam on any forum worldwide we refuse the membership. As spammers try to keep one jump ahead by changing e-mail addresses every 5 mins we have to keep the security questions going, the "are you human" checks and the "re-type the words" save the forum from being invaded by adverts for porn, casinos, weight loss plans, dating agencies, drugs and scams telling people they've won the "Easter Island National Lottery" and their funds are available if they send the bank details to a dodgy e-mail address in Nigeria.
This would clog the forum up in a few hours, so that's why we have to take the time to check the first 30 posts of our already filtered members list.
So far the forum remains totally spam free, hats off to the Admin and moderators for this, it's an endless task.

You can always refresh the Capatcha/Graphic if you cant read it well, most sites have an audio that goes along with it too.

If you want to reply in detail, copy your post before you hit the post button, that way if it goes wrong then you can re-post without having to re-type.  Alternately type into word or notepad and then copy across into the reply box.  No issue.

I have always taken this approach (type into word) on forums because of posting errors which can lose posts, but it has other advantages too i.e. grammar check, ability to save, etc...

I have to admit,it is annoying,I am finding it quite difficult to see what it reads, then I have to download it to windows media player to listen to it-as does not play within the pop up-so I have boxes popping up everywhere and does not do my stress levels any good at all! I think it hinders too much and takes the fun out of everything, just my opinion  //wink//

One of the many good things about this site is that fact that there is no unwanted advertising - just airgun talk usually BSA and alot of friendly banter.

If the new guys stick it out with the quarantine rules they will then enjoy a smoother route to posting - hang in there !!

I'm a new member and to be honest I'm quite relaxed about the initial issues that are being raised here because it gives me confidence that I'm not going to get bombarded with all sorts of garbage from the spammers.

No complaints here  /smile/

Well apart from the fact that my wife seems to object to me keep buying air rifles.....don't think that counts though!

I found the particular captcha graphics on this forum particularly hard to get correct - when I first registered I had to refresh the image half a dozen times before I finally got it correct.

I've never had to refresh more than once anywhere else.
