sorry, i should have said it in another way, on some of the forum's they have a small box to one side that show's who at the time is online and if they just want to say hi then they just click in the box to do so. i say limited word's because you could get a user on it writing a long story and taking up to much of the bandwidth if that makes more sense, /smile/ /smile/

Yes, that would be a good idea.

It's been suggested before and the idea discussed by the mods/admin team. It was decided that the potential for abuse would mean we'd have to moderate the "shout box" 24/7 and that was rejected due to the fact that we don't have moderators online 24/7.
It only takes one user to abuse the shout box and we would have to scrap it so we rejected the idea knowing that it would inevitably be abused.

Can't you just put in a list of banned word? And no links etc? Am I thinking the wrong sort of abuse?

Jamie.

It's not just naughty words or threats, somebody may fill the "shoutbox" with dodgy links and spam. They'd be banned or at least warned for it but it's extra work for the mods and if it happens when no mods are online it's up there for a while to upset or corrupt other users (such as the junior age group members).

To be fair, there are things like MSN that people could download.

Just make a section for BSA members in your own profile.

I've seen them on a couple of forums but they got removed after a while because they were full of rubbish and people trying to have full on conversations! Some people also said it used to take longer to load the site on mobiles
